CDT - Days 17-20

Woke up at the AirBNB in a cold sweat. Being inside, even with a good a.c, still just doesn’t help me sleep well. I often get the night sweats, not sure if it’s PTSD related or just my overall poor sleeping habits/constantly changing environment. Coffee and cold pizza for breakfast. Walked to the Safeway to resupply. Got weird looks with my food spread all over in a corner of the under-hang. Walked to Taco Bell, grabbed incense from a tobacco store and then an oat milk mocha from Starbucks.

Tom swung by to deposit me back to trail. Dropped off at 1330 and pushed to mile 365. My shortest day at 8 miles. Too much food weight and a lightning storm did my aspirations of a further day in. Made pasta and used my heavy sauce.

The 14th saw me up and hiking by 0545. Moving down around a few lakes and remaining mostly in lower, tree-covered areas, = shit load of mosquitos. I have no bug juice… Got trail magic in the form of a Coke from a cooler on the side of the road. met a couple of section hikers with a lovable golden retriever named Murphy. Ate Spanish rice with a can of chicken and a can of jalapeños mixed in. Added cheese and hot sauce. Hiked to mile 389, so 24 miles.

Camped on the side of a dirt road last night. The remains of old cabins are all around my site. A VERY close thunder storm rolled in at 2345 and scared the crap out of me. Another section with horrible mosquitoes. Wore my pants until it got too hot. 17 miles to get to the Route Anaconda alternate. Another round of morning thunderstorms to walk through. Made it to the trailhead at 1330 and finished hiking for the day by 2130. Hiked 28 miles for the day.

Out of the tent by 0630 on my wedding anniversary morning (yes, I called Galaxy). 13 miles into the town of Anaconda by 1130. Ate a gas station salad and walked to a Taco Time for second lunch. Arrived at Pintler’s Portal Hostel by by 1300. Dried my gear, shower and laundry first thing. Was going to inquire about renting a bicycle to resupply but was offered a ride to and from the grocery store. Bought steaks to grill for dinner and eggs/bacon to cook for breakfast. Bought another 4 days resupply.

Taking my first 0 day tomorrow to rest up and wait for Monday so I can hit the Butte post office for my new shoes and hat. Somewhere around mile 430. With the available alternates, miles begin to differ slightly. I will refer to official CDT miles as I hit them.

Days on the trail: 20
